- Commit to do something about it – an important first step.
- Set a goal for your room – plan the space to serve you and how you want to live.
- Start small by beginning with a manageable project such as a junk drawer or bookshelf.
- Edit items keeping only things which serve your goal for the space.
- Think green by donating or selling items you no longer need.
- Schedule time to organize – even 20 minutes a day will go a long way!
- Store baking essentials together to speed up your prep time.
- Place all your hanging clothing into the closet with the hangers backwards, only turning them around when an item has been worn, revisit all items at the end of 6 months and donate those items that were not turned.
- Sort through your food containers ensuring there is a lid for every container and dispose of the pieces that do not have a mate.
- Teach your children the value of their items and the environment by modelling the practice of putting your items away when you are done using them.
- Do not go up or down the stairs without taking something that needs to find its way to the next floor.
- Don’t go to bed until you’ve planned out your to-dos for the next day! You will wake up feeling organized and ready to take on the day.
- A gift is not a life sentence, if you don’t love it, let it go!
- Don’t bring it home if you don’t have a place for it to live.
- Schedule blocks of time for organizing to ensure you can finish what you start.
- Remember “Life is a balance of holding and letting go” – Rumi.
